How Stretch Marks Can Affect Teenagers

Dr. Robyn Silverman

Many teens have spoken with me throughout the years about the challenges they face on a daily basis – things like being accepted by their peers, keeping up with the latest trends or even simply maintaining their self-confidence in a world where they often feel they must compare themselves to others. It ’s not surprising that adolescence is often perceived as one of the most stressful times in a child ’s life.

For many teens, their feelings of self-worth can often be based on how others perceive them, rather than how they see themselves. Self-worth is closely tied to their image and thus teens are often self-conscious about imperfections on their skin, such as acne or stretch marks. While many often talk about acne and teens, stretch marks are also a common occurrence during the teenage years that, unfortunately, can sometimes a real impact on self-esteem.

Stretch marks form because the dermis, or the layer that accommodates stretching during growth or weight gain, will tear when stretched too rapidly, causing a disruption in the normal production of collagen. The lack of collagen production causes pink or purple marks to form across the stretched area. During puberty, teenagers experience rapid growth spurts, which can result in the formation of stretch marks on the back, thighs, stomach and, for girls, breasts.

Because I talk to many young people about how they feel about their bodies, I know that stretch mark formation can sometimes add to existing teen anxieties, such as dealing with blemishes or finding the right clothes. Teenagers may express a feeling of being unable to control how they look, and in turn, how they feel. It ’s important to let them know that stretch marks are a normal part of growing up. For those who feel anxious about their stretch marks and would like to lessen their appearance, I recommend applying a topical cream or gel directly to the skin like Mederma® Stretch Marks Therapy when stretch marks first appear. Mederma® Stretch Marks Therapy is clinically shown to reduce the overall appearance, diminish the discoloration, improve the texture and enhance the softness of stretch marks.

Teens can take control of the skin conditions that affect them—which can have an affect on their overall self-esteem. Everyone should always wear their skin proudly.
