Scars are particularly sensitive to sunlight and may sunburn faster than healthy skin. Once sunburned, scars may become discolored, darkened, and cosmetically unacceptable. Physicians routinely recommend that patients with healing wounds limit sun exposure and use a sunscreen to prevent worsening the appearance of the scar.1

Mederma® Cream is formulated with SPF 30 to help your patients protect their scars from sun exposure while helping to make them less noticeable. With Mederma® Cream, patients can safely treat their scar and protect them from the sun's UV rays.

Mederma® Cream provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with three sunscreens: avobenzone 3%, octocrylene 10%, and oxybenzone 6%. Its lightweight cream formula massages easily into the skin with no greasy residue and is safe for use on all skin types.

Mederma® Cream contains the same key ingredient as original Mederma® Gel in the same concentration. In a recent clinical study, the SPF-cream formulation was as efficacious as the original gel formulation for improving the appearance of scars.1

  • Investigator and subject assessments revealed that gel and cream treatments of scars significantly improved the softness, redness, texture and overall appearance of scars compared to baseline.
  • Resulted in similiar improvements in softness, redness, texture and overall appearance of scars.
  • Were well tolerated and did not result in serious adverse events.
  • Performed comparably and established the parity of the formulations.

In a recent clinical study on Mederma®, 77% of subjects noted moderate to significant improvement in scars treated with Mederma® Gel in terms of redness, texture and overall appearance. Investigator preference for the appearance of Mederma® Gel treated scars at 4, 6 and 10 weeks time was statistically significant (p < 0.001) in softness, redness, texture and overall appearance.

Mederma® Cream is generally safe for use on everyone in patient's family, from children over the age of 6 months to the elderly. However, some people may be sensitive to one or more of its ingredients and may experience mild skin irritation or inflammation. In some people, inflammation can cause discoloration of the skin. If your patients experience any of these symptoms, recommend that they discontinue use immediately. If symptoms persist, they should contact you directly.

Mederma® Cream should be evenly applied and gently rubbed into the scar 3 times daily for 8 weeks on new scars, and 3 times daily for 3-6 months on existing scars. Also apply Mederma® Cream to the scar before sun exposure. Children under 6 months of age: ask a doctor. Always wear sunscreen on exposed skin.

Mederma® Cream is formulated with our proprietary botanical extract, Cepalin®, to help reduce the appearance of scars and SPF 30 to protect scars from sun exposure.
